Gold Leaf Chinoiserie Floral Panel

Gold Leaf Chinoiserie Floral Panel

Chinoiserie

Kensington Gilders created this gold leaf chinoiserie panel for a private client in London. The piece features hand-painted flowers, foliage and a butterfly set against a burnished gold leaf ground, combining traditional gilding with fine decorative painting in the chinoiserie tradition.

The panel was first prepared and gilded with 23.5 carat gold loose leaf, applied over a traditional gesso and bole base. Once the gold ground was complete, our decorative artist painted the botanical elements directly onto the leaf surface using thin oil glazes. Chinoiserie painting on gold leaf requires a confident hand. There is no room for sketching or reworking on a gilded surface, so every brushstroke must be deliberate and placed correctly the first time.

The floral arrangement draws on 18th-century European chinoiserie conventions, with garden roses, lilies and trailing stems arranged in a naturalistic but carefully composed design. The butterfly adds a sense of movement and life to the composition. The colour palette is deliberately restrained, with soft whites, muted greens and touches of lavender allowing the gold ground to remain the dominant element.

This type of panel work is one of the most rewarding commissions we undertake. It brings together two distinct skills, gilding and decorative painting, in a single piece that has a richness and depth no printed wallpaper or transfer can replicate.
