Gold Leaf Chinoiserie Japanese Maple

Gold Leaf Chinoiserie Japanese Maple

Chinoiserie

Kensington Gilders produced this gold leaf chinoiserie panel featuring Japanese maple branches with vivid red autumn leaves against a warm gold ground. The piece was commissioned for a residential interior where the client wanted a bold, dramatic focal point that would sit comfortably alongside period furniture and traditional decor.

The gold leaf ground was applied using 23.5 carat loose leaf over oil size, giving the surface a rich, slightly textured finish that catches the light and provides warmth and depth behind the painted design. The characteristic overlap lines of the leaf sheets are visible in places, which is intentional. In chinoiserie work, these subtle marks are considered part of the character of the piece rather than a flaw to be hidden.

The maple branches were painted in dark umber and black oil paint, with the leaves rendered in layers of red, crimson and orange glazes to build up the translucent quality of real autumn foliage. The contrast between the cool, dark branches and the fiery leaves against the warm gold is what gives this panel its visual impact. The composition follows the Japanese aesthetic of asymmetry, with the branches sweeping across the panel from one corner and the leaves clustering in natural groupings rather than an even pattern.

This commission is a good example of how chinoiserie can be adapted beyond the traditional blue-and-white or pastel palettes that many people associate with the style. The technique is the same, but the colour choices give it a completely different character.
