Gold Leaf Gilded Tree of Life Chinoiserie London
Gold Leaf · ChinoiserieKensington Gilders were commissioned to create this Tree of Life chinoiserie panel for a private client in London. The piece is a celebration of colour and detail, with a central tree trunk sending out an abundance of twisting branches, each laden with exotic flowers, fruits, leaves and seed pods painted in vivid, saturated tones against a luminous gold leaf ground.
The gold leaf base was applied first, using 23.5 carat loose leaf laid over oil size onto a prepared panel. The leaf was laid in overlapping sheets to create a continuous gold surface, and once dry it was gently brushed to remove any loose fragments and sealed to provide a stable ground for the painted decoration.

The painting was then built up over several weeks by our decorative artist, working in oil paints directly onto the sealed gold surface. The Tree of Life is a motif found across many cultures and artistic traditions, from Persian miniatures to Indian textiles to European medieval manuscripts, and this particular interpretation draws on several of those influences. The flowers are not all from a single botanical tradition. Some are recognisably European garden flowers, others have the stylised quality of Indian or Persian decorative art, and some are pure invention. This mixing of influences is entirely in the spirit of chinoiserie, which has always been a Western reinterpretation and reimagining of Eastern decorative traditions rather than a faithful copy.
The level of detail is considerable. Every leaf, every petal, every curling tendril has been individually painted, and the colour palette ranges from deep crimsons and blues through vivid greens and pinks to warm oranges and earthy browns. Small details reward close inspection: insects, berries, hearts and other motifs are tucked among the foliage. The overall effect is of a panel that is both decorative and alive, with a density and richness that draws the eye in and repays repeated viewing.
At the base of the tree, an ornamental lattice pattern grounds the composition and provides a visual anchor for the exuberant growth above. The finished panel was delivered and installed as a feature wall piece in the client's London home.
