Silver Leaf Honeycomb 3D Wall Art
Silver LeafKensington Gilders created this contemporary silver leaf honeycomb 3D wall artwork for a client in London who wanted something that would bridge the gap between traditional gilding craft and modern interior design. Not all of our work is period restoration or heritage gilding — we enjoy the challenge of applying traditional techniques to contemporary forms, and this piece is a good example of what can be achieved.
The artwork consists of a series of hexagonal panels arranged in a honeycomb pattern, each panel projecting from the wall at slightly different depths to create a three-dimensional sculptural effect. The hexagons were fabricated from MDF, carefully cut and sanded to precise dimensions, and then individually prepared for silver leafing.

The preparation of each hexagonal panel followed the same discipline as any gilding project: filling, sanding, sealing, and building up a smooth base coat. Because the panels would be displayed together as a group, any inconsistency in surface quality between panels would be immediately visible, so every piece had to meet the same standard.
We applied genuine silver leaf to each panel using oil size, working systematically to ensure even coverage across the flat face and around the bevelled edges. The edges were particularly important — in a 3D installation like this, the viewer sees the artwork from different angles, and the leaf must wrap cleanly around every exposed surface.
Once leafed, the panels were sealed with a clear lacquer to prevent the silver from tarnishing. Silver is far more reactive than gold and will darken within weeks if left unprotected, so the sealing stage is essential for any silver leaf work that is intended to retain its bright appearance.
The finished installation was mounted on the client's wall using a concealed fixing system, creating the impression that the honeycomb structure floats against the surface. Under ambient lighting, the silver leaf catches and reflects light differently across each panel, giving the piece a dynamic, shifting quality as you move around the room.
