Gold Leaf Mosaic Fish Artwork
Gold Leaf · ArtworkKensington Gilders were commissioned to create this hand-painted faux mosaic on the ceiling of a washroom in a luxury private mansion in Montenegro. The brief was to paint a fish-themed mosaic with a sense of fun, and the client was delighted with the finished result.
Faux mosaic painting creates the convincing illusion of laid tesserae using paint alone. The irregular grid, the subtle colour variation between adjacent tiles, the grout lines and the slight dimensional quality of each unit are all achieved with brushwork. It is a technique with a long decorative history, and it requires both the technical skill to replicate the visual characteristics of real mosaic and the artistic ability to compose a design that works within that constraint.

The fish design fills the entire ceiling with a composition that draws on classical Roman and Byzantine mosaic traditions while keeping the character light and playful. The colour palette is rich and varied, with deep blues and teals for the water, warm golds and sandy tones for the background, and vivid naturalistic colours for the marine life. The ceiling of a washroom is a demanding surface to work on, with every minute spent with the head tilted back and arms raised, but the result more than rewarded the effort.
